About the Artist

About the Artist

Richard attended Chanute High School and graduated from the Chanute Junior College in 1960, then received his bachelor's degree in business from Emporia State University.  In 1963, Richard accepted employment with Farmland Industries.  In spring of 1968, his National Guard unit received orders for Vietnam.  After returning from Vietnam, he went to graduate school in Louisiana where he earned an MBA from Nicholls State University, in Thibodaux, Louisiana.  He returned to work for Farmland and served in a variety of management positions, eventually retiring as plant manager of the Lawrence Nitrogen Plant.

He began painting shortly after his retirement and without any formal art training.  After experimenting with various techniques and styles, he gravitated toward acrylic for its forgiveness and ability to adjust consistency to achieve a wide variety of textures and effects.  Landscapes offer him a challenge that places him in some of our nation's most beautiful locations.  He loves to work on location, in the sun-drenched beaches of Florida and the rural mid-western countryside, as well as in his studio, giving his imagination creative license.

Richard's work has been included in various shows and galleries, winning first place in the annual Presbyterian Manner Art is Ageless competition on several different occasions, and having one of his pieces selected for a 2015 calendar.  He has recently decided to make his work available to the public through this website and for purchase.
